In assisting current and prospective students with defining, planning and achieving their educational goals, Academic Advisors provide guidance, advocacy and support to student learning and development.
The Role

    • Communication Coordination

    • Act as a key contact for students, the school and other student services.
    • Coordinate internal and external communications regarding admissions, registration, examinations, scholarships, policies & procedures, scheduling and Banner student database usage for reports and processes.
    • Academic Administration

    • Create and maintain currency of program information documents.
    • Create reports and provide analysis of student data to aid Academic Chairs with program decisions.
    • Assist in academic administrative activities as needed (including delegated signing authority).
    • Student Progression and Timely Completion

    • Incorporate preparation, facilitation, documentation and assessment of advising interactions in guiding students to become successful, resilient and independent learners.
    • Advise students with regard to SAIT policies & procedures on course registration, supplemental examinations, grade appeals, scholarships, course and program withdrawals, and transfers.
    • Advise applicants, current students and other interested parties with regard to admission requirements, selection, course content, fees, graduation requirements, student loan requirements, student awards, accommodations, and the transferring of post-secondary credits.
    • Work with students to plan program completion taking into consideration pre-requisite requirements, major and minor requirements, elective requirements, and schedule of course offerings.
    • Recommend students to the Student Awards Office for scholarships/bursaries.
    • Student Career Planning and Development

    • Advise students on employment opportunities and careers within the program and direct students to internal and external resources for personal and professional development.
    • Focus on student success by working with students on probation, at-risk students, athletics, international students, etc.
    • School Events & Activities

    • Assist Academic Chairs with the selection process for the assigned program(s).
    • Work with Academic Chairs on recruitment initiatives such as attending internal and external events including information sessions and open house events.
    • Liaise with employers regarding student work experience opportunities.
    • Student Co-Curricular Activities

    • Participate in student life and co-curricular activities to help students broaden their experience as well as their personal development and wellbeing.

    • Excellence: demonstrate excellence through a conscientious and thorough approach to the work, always striving for a high standard that adheres with SAIT policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge

    • Strong knowledge of post-secondary education programming, environment, policies and procedures, and working with diverse student populations.
    • Post-secondary or professional related experience would be an asset.
    • Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area with a minimum of two years’ experience in academic advising, planning or counselling. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
    • Intermediate skills in MS Office Suite of applications.
    • Familiarity with the Banner Student Information System would be an asset.
    • Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication Skills.
    • Conflict resolution, negotiation and problem solving skills
    • The ability to handle confidential matters in a sensitive manner.
    • The ability to collect and appropriately analyze statistical data and information.
    • Ability to work independently and as a contributing member of a team departmentally and institutionally.
    • Ability to effectively handle shifting or changing priorities, including working additional hours with advanced notice.
    • Ability to create a rapport with students to build an academic advising relationship
