Position: Teacher
Salary: Commensurate with experience and the Penelakut Education Salary Grid; benefits upon completion of a three month probation period.
Term: Fixed Term until June 28, 2023

We are looking for an outstanding, dedicated individual who is passionate about working with a small number of learners in Grades 10-12. Penelakut Island School currently operates a four day week from 8:20 – 3:20 Monday to Thursday.

Nature of Work:
Under the guidance of the principal, you will provide classroom instruction to students enrolled in an alternative education setting. You will provide instruction to individual students and small groups in a variety of academic and outdoor subjects and other learning activities. You may also be required to implement personal education plans.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides small group instruction to students enrolled in an alternative school setting.
  • Development and implementation of a personall education plan for students (when required).
  • Plans daily classroom instructional activities.
  • Administers student assessments to ascertain academic needs of students enrolled.
  • Works collaboratively with school and agency counselors, administrators, parents and related service providers in the overall educational plan for students to include lessons that address the student’s behavioral needs.
  • Prepares lesson plans to correlate with student needs.
  • Maintains student records and files in a confidential manner.
  • Keeps accurate documentation regarding student progress, needs, strengths, etc. (i.e. grades, observations, anecdotal records, other related data).
  • Keeps daily student attendance.
  • Communicates with parents, administrators, and related service providers on an as needed basis.
  • Manages and administers instructional activities for teacher aides.
  • Submits all reports, forms, records and data as requested by Secondary Education Director and/or Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Bachelor of Education Degree
  • Must be in good standing with the BC Teacher Regulation Branch of the Ministry of Education
  • Cultural sensitivity with an awareness of Hul’qumi’num language and culture
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Candidates must have the ability to maintain a calm, professional manner in a fast paced environment which will often require multi tasking
  • Must have excellent classroom management skills
