Role Overview:
Reporting to the Executive Director, Government Affairs and Policy (GAAP), the Senior Manager, Policy is responsible for public policy priorities that increase the visibility and credibility of the organization and support advocacy for meaningful change for people at risk for, and living with, diabetes. The Senior Manager will research, study, and interpret broad policy direction & programs and provides recommendations regarding specific policy/program options. The position also analyzes and evaluates regulatory, statute, and other impacts and changes to government programs and services to determine their impact on people living with diabetes. This role will have the Heath Policy Analyst report directly to them.
Location: Accepting applications from candidates across Canada. Flexible work agreement policy in place allows employees to work on a hybrid schedule, working from home and working remote.
This role includes, but not limited to:
- Develops key health policy initiatives, projects, and assignments and provides recommendations to the Executive Director, GAAP.
- Liaises with Health Canada and other relevant government departments and health organizations on the federal/provincial/territorial policies and programs impacting people affected by diabetes, and provides policy analysis and recommendations to the GAAP team and the entire organization.
- Participates in internal and external working groups and committees related to various health policy issues relevant to people living with diabetes and leads/ contributes to the development of policy position statements on various matters related to diabetes care and management.
- Oversees issues, legislation, and developments that impact the policy development function of the organization, including but not limited to: research design, collection and statistical analysis of data, and interpretation and dissemination of results that impact public policy for the organization.
- Assists in the development of health policy reports, resources, and infographics for people living with diabetes, clinicians, educators, public servants, elected officials, and researchers.
- Provides the analysis of health policy -related issues relevant to the work of the organization, including, researching and synthesizing information, identification of policy options, preparation of policy documents and the evaluation of potential impacts of policy decisions.
- Oversee and monitor budget, revenue, and expenses for all policy initiatives.
- Responds to media inquiries about diabetes statistics, facts, and recommendations for type 2 diabetes prevention and diabetes management, and attends and speaks at conferences and workshops, disseminating information and promoting the organization’s advocacy and policy positions.
- Directs and leads industry-funded projects that are in alignment with the organization’s strategic direction, assisting in the procurement and coordination of the work of contractors and consultants, in undertaking policy initiatives.
The ideal candidate possesses:
- Graduate degree in a discipline pertinent to the job function (e.g., health, public policy, social services, or public health) or the equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
- 5+ years’ experience in policy development, policy research, or stakeholder relations in or connected to chronic disease, with an emphasis on diabetes.
- Understanding of health policy issues and health policy development processes through a history of involvement in/or knowledge of government.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Experience managing people and projects.
- Research skills and managing multiple priorities from different stakeholders.
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Proven ability to solve problems independently
- Ability to multitask and prioritize to ensure deliverables and deadlines are met or exceeded.
