Professor Michael Gervers, in the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough, invites applicants for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) in Ethiopian History and Art History for “Textiles in Ethiopian Manuscripts” Project. This position is funded by a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
This opportunity of a Research Associate (Limited Term) is a 2-year term appointment with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023.
Qualifications (Minimum Qualifications):
The selected scholar will have a PhD in Medieval or Early Modern History/Art History or comparable discipline with extensive experience of at least five (5) or more years in Digital Humanities and on-line bibliographic search engines. Applicants need to have extensive knowledge of Ge’ez (Old Ethiopic) and to have taught the language for a minimum of five (5) years at the University level. Latin, and other modern languages (German or Italian) are also expected. Additional skills required include project management, leadership and interpersonal skills to assist in the guidance and implementation of the research project that is comprised of a multi-disciplinary and international team of scholars.
The Research Associate (Limited Term) will ensure the integrity of the project by mastering existing research protocols and administering them accurately. A strong background in project management is required to link multidisciplinary work (history, art history, textiles, digital humanities), and maintain contact with collaborators in Canada and abroad; implement and manage the knowledge mobilization program; work with the Digital Scholarship Unit at U of T to enhance the digital platform on which this project resides and ensure that all processes follow most recent ethical and technical protocols; write articles arising from project research for publication; participate and present in conferences and workshops; and manage the SSHRC IG research budget.
The normal hours of work per week for a full-time Research Associate (Limited Term) is 36.25 hours per week.
Travel: Limited. The Research Associate will be expected to present research at academic conferences.
Notes: This is a 2-year term appointment, with the possibility of extension, depending on approval of supervisor, based on performance and funding.
