Job Summary
The Research Assistant will work on a variety of projects within the Men’s Health Research (MHR) program. MHR develops, implements, and formally evaluates community-based and e-health interventions addressing men’s depression and suicide, psychosocial prostate cancer care, and tobacco reduction and smoking cessation in fathers and men.
The Research Assistant will support the Research Coordinator in the coordination for all MHR research projects, including coordinating study recruitment and interviews, testing and administering surveys, organizing team meetings, and developing and submitting research proposals and associated documents.
The Research Assistant will work virtually and/or be based in the MHR program unit (http://menshealthresearch.ubc.ca/) at the School of Nursing in Vancouver, BC.
Organizational Status
The Research Assistant directly reports to the Research Coordinator and Principal Investigator, Dr. John Oliffe. The Research Assistant collaborates with and is responsible for communications with various team members, including project collaborators and health professionals.
Work Performed

  • Assist with research grant application activities, such as preparing grant application packages, updating investigators’ CVs, and collecting required documents from investigators

  • Assist with coordinating regular updates and reporting to funding partners

  • Assist with study recruitment and scheduling interviews

  • Assist with accuracy checks on transcribed interview data

  • Assist with the set up and maintenance of files, data tracking and storage

  • Assist with administrative duties including CV management and manuscript formatting and submission

  • Ensure timely notification to Research Coordinator of issues or problems

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Coordinator and Principal Investigator will monitor the work of the incumbent. Errors or incorrect decisions could potentially result in delays in completing the project or seriously compromise the quality of the research.
Supervision Received
The Research Assistant reports to the MHR Research Coordinator and Principal Investigator, Dr. John Oliffe. Work is reviewed periodically by the PI to assess the scope of work performed and the achievement of defined goals and key performance indicators.
Supervision Given
None but may explain work sequences to others.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience with literature on the relevance of the social sciences to men’s mental health, research and theories, and literature on critical inquiry. Knowledge of qualitative research methods and analysis. Demonstrated ability and experience in research writing and analysis. Education/training and experience in quantitative research methods, multivariate statistical analysis, and qualitative research methods and data analysis. Education/training and experience with using data analysis software including NVivo and SPSS. Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro) or equivalent programs for video, sound, and image editing would be an asset. Ability to work both independently and within an interdisciplinary team environment. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated initiative and the willingness to work closely with members of a research team to ensure problems are resolved quickly and appropriately. Ability to exercise confidentiality, tact and discretion. Computer skills required.
