Department/Faculty Summary

The Community-University Partnership for the Study of Children, Youth, Families and Communities – (CUP) is a unique collaboration among the University of Alberta, community agencies, and organizations in and around Edmonton and across Alberta. We are committed to improving the development of children, youth, families, and communities by creating or mobilizing evidence-informed knowledge that impacts programs, practices, and policies. CUP has a 20-year history of collaborative community-based research experience. CUP is led by a steering committee comprised of over 25 leaders from municipal and provincial government, not-for-profit agencies, school boards, and foundations.

EndPovertyEdmonton (EPE) is a community initiative working towards prosperity for all through advancing reconciliation, the elimination of racism, inclusive economy, accessible and affordable transit, affordable and quality child care, access to mental health services and addiction supports, Indigenization, and affordable housing. Canada is experiencing one of the worst housing affordability crises around the globe and in its own history. In recent years, researchers, government, and corporate donors have recognized Community Development Corporations (CDCs) as a promising approach to not only address housing affordability, but to also improve urban communities and the lives of its residents.


Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, and in collaboration with a postdoctoral fellow, the Research Assistant will support primary and secondary research and evaluation efforts. The Research Assistant will work with the Edmonton Community Development Company (ECDC) using a community-based participatory approach, along with a knowledge mobilization focus aimed to support EPE’s and the ECDC’s research, evaluation, and advocacy efforts. These tasks will draw on quantitative, mixed methods, and qualitative research methodologies to determine the impacts of the ECDC on the community and the people who live in it.


Duties


Research:

  • Collect data using a community-based participatory approach with qualitative, mixed, and quantitative methods.
  • Contribute to developing data collection tools and preparing materials and consent forms.
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data using appropriate software and techniques (e.g., NVivo, SPSS).
  • Maintain and protect confidential research data, adhering to ethical conduct and privacy requirements at all times.
  • Conduct environmental scans and literature reviews as related to ongoing and new projects.
  • Contribute to writing research papers, presentations, and publications.
  • Present results to partners, funders, and/or at conferences.
  • Contribute to preparing and writing sections for submission of quality grant proposals and funding applications.
  • Write ethics applications; update and maintain ethics approvals as necessary.

Knowledge Mobilization & Communication:

  • Translate technical and/or analytical results into useful information for community partners.
  • Assist with preparation of knowledge mobilization products, including for academic (presentations, papers, abstracts) and community (reports, briefs, summaries, presentations) audiences.
  • Participate in research team meetings, and in meetings related to research activities in the community.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with community, government and academic partners, liaising between the project team and the community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Geography, Education, Human Ecology, Sociology, Public Health) combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience in collaborative, interdisciplinary, or intersectoral project work; ability to communicate with individuals from a variety of organizations and backgrounds.
  • Qualitative, mixed, and quantitative research knowledge, skills, and experience.
  • Experience with qualitative (e.g., NVivo) and quantitative (e.g., SPSS) analysis software.
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, oral and written), including the ability to translate complex research results to community partners.
  • Prior experience with using a variety of knowledge mobilization strategies to communicate about complex issues.
  • Exceptional organizational capacity.
  • Excellent initiative and ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Knowledge of research ethics and guidelines in an academic environment.
  • Sensitivity to ethical issues, especially privacy and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates perseverance, resilience, and determination to achieve goals and finish what is started.
  • High level of flexibility, adaptability, and ability to prioritize to meet urgent and evolving partner needs.
  • Innovative and offers creative solutions to challenging and complex problems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in a social science discipline (e.g., Geography, Education, Human Ecology, Sociology, Public Health).
