Job Summary The Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University is a small research-intensive campus located in Truro, NS. Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture, environment and related life and social science disciplines, the Faculty of Agriculture educates future leaders and generates knowledge and innovative solutions for healthy, sustainable societies. Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will assist the Maritime Cereal and Oilseed Variety Evaluation Trials and other field trials, as well as support research activities in the laboratory.
Key Responsibilities
  • Engage in field layout, planting, spraying, weeding, evaluating, and harvesting of field crop research trials.
  • Operate and maintain large and small field and lab equipment.
  • Measure grain moisture, test weight, and other seed quality traits.
  • Train and supervise graduate and summer student assistants including training and supervision in the use of field equipment.
  • Collect and enter research data as well as complete analysis as required.
  • Assist with the writing of reports and knowledge transfer documents.
Note The incumbent must be available to work flexible and irregular hours including overtime, weekends and holidays as required to complete time sensitive tasks. Scheduling and compensation will be in accordance with the collective agreement.
The incumbent will be regularly exposed to machinery, organic and biological materials, products and amendments (e.g. fertilizers, pesticides, manure), extreme temperatures, dust, noise, and odors.
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in agriculture with a major in Plant Science or Diploma in Plant Science or related field plus approximately one year’s relevant experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Experience in field crop production and management of crops.
  • Experience operating small- and large-scale farm equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of agronomic practices and field research.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Solid communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety.
  • Valid Class 5 Nova Scotia driver’s license.
  • Have or obtain within first two months of hire a: NS pesticide applicators license, First Aid, WHMIS and OH&S training.
  • Significant physical effort including regularly lifting up to 25 kg; operating equipment; and standing and walking for extended periods.
Assets
  • Previous experience supervising students.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to have training in precision agriculture and other agricultural areas as required
