The Complex Care and Recovery Program is currently seeking a part-time, permanent Recreation Therapist to join its Geriatric Mental Health Inpatient Services. Reporting to the Senior Manager, you will be expected to work collaboratively within an inpatient interprofessional team setting. You will be expected to promote holistic leisure activities tailored to older adults by developing and implementing activities that address clients’ social, physical, spiritual, emotional and cognitive needs. Your target client population will be 65 years of age and older with mental health and addiction issues, usually with co-occurring medical issues. You will be responsible for developing, planning, facilitating, scheduling, organizing and implementing various therapeutic recreation programs. This will be accomplished by conducting assessments, developing individual recreation plans, completing patient documentation, skill instruction, development of program goals and objectives and evaluating a variety of individual and group recreation programs. You will be expected to support and contribute to program development activities, as well as to research and implement educational activities. The position will require evening and weekend hours and is based at 1001 Queen Street West.The successful candidate will possess a degree/diploma in Recreation/Recreation Therapy or a Post Graduate Certificate in Recreation Therapy, along with one (1) year experience as a Recreation Therapist combined with good working knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles and practices. A member in good standing or the eligibility for membership with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) is required. Experience working as a Recreation Therapist with clients who have an addiction and/or mental illness is preferred. Proven experience in Recreation with Geriatric clients, knowledge of normal aging processes, mental health/psychiatric work experience (at least one (1) year) with seniors with mental illness and/or addictions and knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation principles are preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working in or have had recent clinical practicums in mental health, long term care, retirement, or rehabilitation facilities. In addition, you possess a fundamental knowledge and application of the current Best Practices for the Geriatric Mental Health Services clients. You will also possess excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a member of an interprofessional team. Familiarity with computer-based programs, including MS Office and Outlook, is essential. The ability to work with clients of diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds is required. Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language are considered an asset.CAMH is a fully affiliated teaching hospital and research institute of the University of Toronto.
