A key component of the plan is the deployment of a Behaviour Support Outreach Team (‘BSOT’), consisting of interdisciplinary community outreach clinicians, nurses and personal support workers who have behavioural support expertise. The Recreational Therapist (RT) is a new role to help enhance the quality of life for the BSO clients and to assist with the management of responsive behaviours secondary to dementia. The function of the RT will be directed by the input from the clinical team. The RT role will provide support to clients living in the community and long-term care sectors. Leisure is an important component of both quality of life and well-being. It allows individuals opportunities for self-determination and utilization of strengths while engaging in meaningful leisure, which is the foundation of Therapeutic Recreation services.Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Works with clinicians to assess, develop and facilitate therapeutic and purposeful activities using best practices to meet the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and emotional needs of residents living in the community (private homes, retirement homes, etc.) and long-term care.
  • Collaborates with caregivers and community partners to identify and implement meaningful recreation
  • Engages in interprofessional collaboration across regions of the Behavioural Support Outreach Team.
  • Creates and provides education through presentations for the team.
  • Completes documentation as required
  • Attends interprofessional team meetings and rounds
  • Interviews, orients, supervises and sets expectations with volunteers
  • Contributes to interprofessional team and therapeutic recreation professional development
  • Coordinates services with other staff/departments
  • Develops and maintains inventory of program supplies
  • Utilize Behaviour Support Ontario protocols and tools
  • Provides mentorship and guidance to colleagues and as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Supports the spread of improvement practices regarding the management of responsive behaviours through therapeutic programming
  • Maintain effective relationships with Community Partners, Volunteers and Caregivers.

Qualifications include but are not limited to:

  • Four (4) year Honours Degree in Therapeutic Recreation (‘TR’) or Recreation & Leisure Studies with TR specialization preferred; equivalencies will be considered.
  • Member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (‘TRO’).
  • Additional Education/ Certificates Preferred including: U-First, Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA); PIECES, DementiAbility Methods for Dementia; Supporting Older Adults Living with Mental Illnesses.
  • Extensive knowledge working with older adults with various forms of dementia, delirium, complex mental health and/or, other neurological conditions, including those with or at risk of responsive behaviours and the effects on care partners.
  • 3-5 years’ relevant experience in long-term care is preferred.
  • Knowledge of community resources an asset
  • Knowledge of Jewish culture, Holy Days and festivals is an asset
