Duration:     One year, with possibility of renewal for second year

Salary:         $53,500 CAD per year, plus Alberta Blue Cross Plan C Health Insurance benefits

The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholars in macro energy systems with a focus on mid transition dynamics in the electricity sector. 

Job Description:

The research will be focused on characterizing and quantifying the dynamics of the contraction of fossil fuel-based electricity systems and growth of non-emitting generation, including describing potential pathways of contraction and determining when and how operational issues arise, defining new metrics that can be integrated into existing modeling approaches, and defining and evaluating different solutions to address transition challenges. In addition, the postdoctoral scholar will be responsible for reporting progress updates for funding agencies and may provide supervision and mentoring for undergraduate and graduate students.

The postdoctoral scholar will work with director Dr. Sara Hastings-Simon and have the opportunity to collaborate with other faculty, as well within the Faculty of Science, including Arts (Economics), Engineering, and Law.

The initial appointment is for one year, with funding available for renewal for a second year contingent on satisfactory performance.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Science or Engineering from a relevant discipline, or other field with evidence of significant analytical experience. Clear interest in interdisciplinary work should be expressed in the cover letter in relation to the proposed work.

Excellent data management skills are essential, as well as the ability to work autonomously, in addition to:

• demonstrated experience and background in energy systems, electricity, and decarbonization;
• effective communication skills and ability to work booth independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary group involving interdepartmental, faculty and external stakeholders;
• strong communication skills (both written and verbal), including strong listening skills
• continuous learning and development, and willingness to accept new challenges and assignments
• time management skills to effectively manage own time with a strong ability to prioritize to meet deadlines and multiple commitments
