The Prosthetics & Orthotics Laboratory Technologist is also responsible to develop, prepare and perform demonstrations and lectures of laboratory procedures and techniques to enhance the learning of applied skills in a safe, efficient, and employable manner.Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the supervising and instructing students in the prosthetic and orthotic laboratory spaces. Prepares project supplies and materials in advance as needed. Provides immediate and direct feedback to students to help facilitate their learning. Ensures that students’ learning outcomes are progressing. Supervises and grades lab projects and lab exams.
- Manages the safe and comprehensive end of day lab clean-up and closing process of technical laboratory and learning spaces. Relays student performance concerns to faculty and the Program Coordinator, as required.
- Assists and supports staff, faculty, and the Program Coordinator, in receiving lab supplies, project materials, and inventory management as required. Also ensures students minimize wastage of inventory due to poor change with technique/protocols.
- Adherence to Health and Safety principles. Adherence to AODA standards. Ensures that the students follow safe and proper use of all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), machinery and hazardous materials. Reports equipment maintenance or safety issues, as required. May engage in minor machine maintenance and repairs.
- Responsible for developing curricula to enhance students’ learning of applied skills required to be employable in the Prosthetics and Orthotics Technical industry. This may include, but not be restricted to, live demonstrations, pre-recorded/flipped content, multimedia lectures, learning resources. The laboratory demonstrations of practical and current fabrication techniques are to be done at industry standards. The POLT will also be responsible for development, supervision, and evaluation of laboratory exams.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Educational and Experience Requirements:
- Two-year college diploma from the GBC Prosthetics & Orthotics technical program.
- Registered Prosthetic or Orthotic Technician (or in process) with Orthotics Prosthetics Canada.
- Other applicable education may be considered.
- Minimum of three (3) years of work experience within a technical Prosthetics/Orthotics environment.
- Experience in the larger Prosthetics and Orthotics facility is preferred.
- Experience with Google Suite and Microsoft Office – in Word, Excel and Outlook, and ordering/inventory software preferred.
