CERC.OCEAN is a world-class research program established to observe, understand, and predict biogeochemical and ecological change in the ocean. Job Summary Reporting to the Group Lead, the Ocean Engineering Technologist will gain experience with a wide variety of practical skills and equipment deployments at sea. The Ocean Engineering Technologist will work and cooperate with, a team of scientists, technologists, and engineers to advance ocean research using in situ sensor platforms. The work will include the development and field deployment of surface vehicles, buoys, and moorings.
Key Responsibilities
  • Play a central role in field operations, both by helping in the development and maintenance of field gear and by participating in expeditions.
  • Independently pursue engineering solutions with the feedback and support of an experienced team.
Note Occasional international travel may be required. Flexible working hours will be required.
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications
  • Diploma in electronics engineering, ocean technology, or related field, with a minimum of 2 years related experience with software engineering, process controls, PLCs, programming languages (C++, C, LabView, MATLAB, Python) and/or robotics middleware (e.g. ROS).
  • Experience with embedded system hardware and software design.
  • Experience with PCB design (e.g. Eagle, Altium)
  • Experience with mechanical design (e.g. SolidWorks), fabrication, and assembly of system components
  • Ability to work at sea.
  • Must pass a physical examination required for MED A3 training and Transport Canada certification.
Assets
  • Undergraduate degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with autonomous vehicles.
  • Experience in ocean and environmental measurement technology.
  • Sea-going experience.
  • Experience with commercial procurement of electrical/mechanical parts, including the ability to work with local fabricators and suppliers for the procurement of custom parts.
