Position Overview

The Centre for Genome Engineering in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Molecular Genetics Technician for approximately 24 months.

The Molecular Genetics Technician reports to the Manager of the Centre for Genome Engineering (CGE).  The CGE is ultimately responsible to CAT as the Cumming School of Medicines mechanism for the oversight of core facilities.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assist researchers in the generation of GEMMs (facilitated by the three components within the CGE -Molecular Biology, ES Cell and Transgenics Labs)

  • Designing strategies for the generation of genetically engineered mouse models (knockout, knock-in, knock-down, single base modification, conditional transgenesis, humanization, etc.)

  • Designing, construction, and preparation of transgenic constructs

  • Use of CRISPR/Cas9, site-specific recombinases, and BAC recombineering for model development

  • Preparation of samples for microinjection and electroporation

  • Development of genotyping strategies for genetically engineered mouse models and subsequent genotyping

  • Evaluation and adaptation of new technologies and expansion of services to meet the changing research needs of the University

  • Contribution to project management by maintenance of data, project updates, current protocols, and detailed project records

  • Providing training, sharing knowledge, technical skills or presenting specialized technical information to internal or external stakeholders

  • Overseeing reliable and safe operation of laboratory equipment/spaces including ordering, maintenance of responsible inventory and stock of all necessary materials and supplies

  • Maintain quality control, current protocols, and detailed project records

  • Routinely contribute to the evaluation, creation, development and adaptation of services/processes to meet the changing research needs of the department and University/Research with input from Scientific Directors

  • Publish and/or present pertinent research accomplishments or findings in internal and external journals or publications, which are reviewed locally, nationally and/or globally while generating experimental data reports for stakeholders in the facility

  • Oversee reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment/spaces including ordering, maintaining responsible inventory and stock of all necessary materials and supplies

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or higher required
  • Minimum 2 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline
  • 3 to 5 years of related technical experience within the research specialty field
  • Advanced technical skills and knowledge in principles, concepts and practices with the focus on GEMM production as they relate to molecular biology with a proven track record in the field
  • Broad knowledge of principles and concepts in related areas
  • Ability to design PCR strategies and programs
  • Ability to design and test CRISPR gRNAs
  • Impeccable organizational, client service and communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders in a project
  • Exceptional note taking, record keeping and the ability to manage multiple tasks with a high level of accuracy, independence and flexibility
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Fluent in written and oral English with excellent communication skills
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization
  • Proficiency in computer and Internet related skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Peoplesoft, Chematix)
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System Certificate (WHMIS)
  • Radioactivity Training Certificate (can provide on the job training)
