Position Description
Temporary assignment -approximately 25 weeks
POSITION SUMMARY
The Medical Imaging Assistant assists with a variety of medical imaging procedures under the direct supervision of a Medical Radiation/Imaging Technologist (MRT). The successful candidate performs duties requiring limited technical skills and responsibilities and which do not require interpretation or assessment to facilitate imaging tests and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Grade 12 education or recognized equivalent
- Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate
- Imaging Assistant Certificate is preferred
- Minimum 1-year previous experience working as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) and/ or Imaging Assistant
- Student currently enrolled in a CMRITO accredited Medical Radiation Technology program, this can include students in General Radiography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, Cardiac Sonography and Radiation Therapy
- Canadian or Internationally trained Radiation Technologist or Internationally trained physician with 1-year experience in a clinical setting
- Excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication skills (verbal and written)
- Demonstrated problem solving and organizational skills
- Proven ability to work in a team environment
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists with, under the direct supervision of a Medical Radiation/Imaging Technologist (MRT) a variety of imaging tests and procedures, with accuracy and efficiency, in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Diagnostic Services and Electrodiagnostic services program.
- Under Medical Directive, responsible for IV insertion
- Performs specific patient procedures e.g. ECG, blood pressure, as required
- Prepares for, arranges for and assists/performs patient transport to and from inpatient units or to/from imaging equipment, stretchers, wheelchairs, etc.
- Initiates searches for delayed or missing patients
- Where trained, operates and maintains imaging equipment according to procedures. Recognizes failure and immediately requests direction from an MRT
- Performs preliminary tasks to support testing and procedures, e.g. cleaning/preparing room, stocking of supplies, assists patient from waiting room, removal of waste/linen, configuration of imaging equipment
- Performs initial screening of patients, checks for contraindications and is able to communicate with the Radiologist, MRT, patient, and/or family as required
- Performs other technical tasks or duties to support imaging tests or procedures, as required
- Documents and communicates complaints, problems and discrepancies from internal and external customers
- Reviews upcoming patient schedules/requisition for omissions, discrepancies and opportunities and reviews with MRT for next steps, as required
- Follows inventory control system to ensure availability of adequate supplies and orders and restocks supplies based on usage and requirements
- Under Medical Directive, prepares and handles contrast media as required
- Files and retrieves patient related material, e.g. requisitions, film, reports
- Handles body fluids and potentially infectious materials to ensure safety of patients, self, the public, and other staff
- Assists with patient emergencies, such as Code Blue, as able/trained to
- Maintains competency as an MIA through participation in training and continuing education
- May be required to rotate through various areas of Diagnostic Services and Electrodiagnostic Services and to participate in intravenous insertion
- Performs other duties as assigned
