We are currently recruiting for a Manager, Government and Community Relations who will report to the Director of Government & Public Affairs. Your primary responsibilities will be to support the development, management and maintenance of relationships between federal, provincial, local, other governments, and appropriate agencies and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology to enhance the institute’s image and further its goals. Additionally, you will initiate and maintain a program of regular communication with elected and senior officials in government in order to advance SAIT’s strategic goals and aims. You will also be responsible for policy development and monitoring and make appropriate recommendations to senior SAIT staff about appropriate reactions and responses.
You will have excellent verbal and interpersonal skills and will be a relationship builder who is skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with peers, across different levels of the organization and externally with the public, industry and government. You will be self-directed, tactful, diplomatic and have strong strategic development skills and ability to implement a strategic plan linked to institutional priorities. Additionally, you will have effective leadership skills recognized within the institution and will have the ability to create and sustain institutional government advocacy.

The Role
- Creates and implements strategic direction for institution’s government relations activities, supporting SAIT and Board priorities
- Conducts environmental assessment of institutions, develops accountability measures and communicates findings to institutional stakeholders
- Represents institution at senior level with external stakeholders
- Communicates effectively and broadly with institution’s executive and management teams
- Be aware of major policy and political developments as being driven by government
- Responsible for management of department’s financial and other resources
- Reviews direction and progress of government relations plan with Director and members of the senior executive team as appropriate
- Develops and maintains contacts with significant SAIT constituencies including internal stakeholders: faculty, staff, students, SAIT’s Board of Governors, and external partners: media, industry, government, and post-secondary colleagues
- Work in collaboration with other post-secondary institutions’ government relations staff to foster a greater understanding of SAIT’s strategic plan and to develop a unified post-secondary approach to governments where possible
- Develop alliances with our corporate sector government relations personnel to ensure our message is delivered consistently and frequently
Qualifications & Experience
- Post-secondary education in social sciences or equivalent; masters level education or equivalent combination of education may be considered
- 3-5 years’ experience in government, public policy or community relations, or similar
- Must have valid Alberta Driver’s License and valid Canadian Passport
- This role will be required to travel domestically within Alberta and across Canada
- Political judgment and sensitivity with an understanding of the political landscape as it impacts SAIT
- Understanding of specific needs that can be met through increased visibility among policy makers and public support
- Knowledge of Governmental acts and regulations that affect the Institution
- Knowledge of Provincial, Federal and Municipal policies, guidelines and procedures
- Fiscal management skills to effectively utilize department budget
Job classification: Business Development Manager
Salary range: $85,000 – $94,500
Hours Per Week: 37.5
