Established in 1818, Dalhousie is a leading research-intensive university offering more than 180 degree programs in 11 faculties. The Fountain School of Performing Arts is the only university-level performing arts school east of Montreal, facilitating a range of new opportunities to students of Music, Theatre and Film Studies. Each year, the School presents a wide variety of productions, including 3 theatre plays and one opera.
The Fountain School of Performing Arts (FSPA) at Dalhousie University invites applications from junior academics for an early-career probationary tenure track appointment in Costume and Set Design, at the rank of Lecturer/Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2023. The position is subject to budgetary approval.
The successful candidate’s duties may include but are not limited to: teaching classes and designing one or more elements for the Fountain School’s stage productions (see details below); sharing in departmental responsibilities; be active as a researcher and/or creator.
The teaching workload of the successful candidate will be of 18 credit hours per academic year (9 in fall, 9 in winter), equally divided between Costume Studies and Stage Design programs:
  • Teaching courses among, but not limited to the following (each course worth 3 credit hours):
  • THEA 2412 – Language of Design; THEA 2451 – Costume in Performance I; THEA2710 – Stage Design 1; THEA3711/3712 – Stage Design 2; PERF3721/3722 -Digital Design for Performance.
  • Provide design for stage productions, each design element (set and props OR costume) being worth 3 credit hours.
  • Supervise and mentor senior students in design (uncredited, within reason and mutually agreed upon with School Director).


Please note that a course release of 3 credit hours per year will be given to the successful candidate for the first 2 years.
Qualifications expected are MA, MFA or equivalent degree and substantial professional theatre experience with a particular emphasis on Costume and Set Design. Teaching experience at a post-secondary level is required as well as evidence of effective teaching ability (formal course evaluations). Experience in projection design and/or scenic painting is considered an asset.
