Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is looking for a highly motivated person to fulfill a full-time (40h/week) Intern, Developer position in Montreal, QC from May – December 2024.

Job Summary

The Intern, Developer is responsible for maintaining the technical and functional designs conforming to the creation and maintenance of Java and Microservice code. The incumbent prepares Code and Unit Test compliant with standards. The role works with an Agile methodology, and is an integral member of a team that is composed of Designers, Developers, Test Automation and DevOps specialists, including Offshore and Onshore Consultants as well as permanent employees.

Major Responsibilities

  • Define, develop, and Unit Test code aligned with specifications and standards

  • Participate in design analysis

  • Take part in daily scrum team meetings, Sprint Planning, and Retrospective

  • Collaborate with other team members to influence the software delivery lifecycle to improve the overall quality and reliability of products and deliverables

  • Look for process improvements and new considerations that increase efficiency

  • Analyze and investigate test results, troubleshoot issues, and fix defects

  • Assist CN meet its quality and safety objectives


  • Knowledge of Java programing language and Microservices

  • Knowledge of Agile software development approach

  • Knowledge of behavior-driven and test-driven software development

  • Solves problems to create value

  • Applies critical thinking

  • Collaborates with others and shares information

  • Knowledge of Data Engineering*

  • Knowledge of integration technology such as Mulesoft, Kafka, IBM Integration Bus (IIB), and Message Queue (MQ)*

  • Knowledge of DevOps and concepts related to continuous integration and pipeline management*


  • Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent field

*Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset
