The Legislative Services department has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Insurance, Litigation and Risk Coordinator. Reporting to the Corporate Officer (Manager, Legislative Services) this position offers 72 hours bi-weekly starting as soon as possible.

The Insurance, Litigation and Risk Coordinator is responsible for managing the insurance, litigation and legal claims served on the municipality and is the main municipal contact with the Municipal Insurance Association of British Columbia. Regular duties include managing legal opinions and legal processes and as a subject matter expert will provide advice, guidance and support to municipal departments related to insurance, litigation and legal claims. The role also provides all departments with advice and guidance on contracts, agreements and risk related activities.

Qualified candidates have completed a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as law, public administration or political science with at least 3-5 years of experience in a similar position including the management of insurance or litigation files. Additional legal, risk management and/or insurance training considered a strong asset. Qualified candidates demonstrate considerable knowledge and experience with the practices, procedures, terminology, and professional standards for insurance, litigation, and risk management and of municipal law; knowledge of local government legislation and legislative processes; and knowledge of notices of claim, court proceedings and legal procedures. Qualified candidates also possess the proven abilities to provide insurance related feedback related to legal documents, agreements, and contracts; can undertake, compile and analyze a variety of legal research; and is proficient with a variety of windows-based programs with the ability to learn new and changing technology.

The successful candidate demonstrates excellent written and verbal communications skills with a professional and approachable demeanor and a high degree of tact, diplomacy and discretion. The successful candidate is organized and detail oriented, can effectively analyze and solve problems, works well under pressure, effectively prioritizes workload, and maintains confidentiality. The successful candidate also demonstrates commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace and will create effective working relationships with others while contributing to a positive team environment. As a requirement of the position, the successful applicant must hold a valid BC class 5 driver’s license and must provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract and a satisfactory Police Information Check prior to beginning employment.
