Broad areas of focus include water, energy, and food. More specifically, this includes sustainable cities and communities (mobility, logistics, construction and the built environment, water use and treatment), responsible production and consumption (food waste, circular economy, recycling, sustainable materials), and clean and affordable energy (grid technologies, energy production, environmental remediation).Co-op Intern Investment Students join one of our teams for a work term during undergraduate or graduate studies, to operate parts of the process of evaluating potential deals and of monitoring our current portfolio. In this role, you will network, research, and perform analysis for prospective and current investments, as well as help with back-office and middle-office activities. These will cover strategic topics such as markets, industries, ecosystems, and competition, as well as operational ones, such as financials, management, and products. You are expected to leverage sharp analytic skills and be able to work alongside experts on a variety of market and industrial subjects.CHALLENGES TO BE METPlatform BuildingAssist in managing the deal pipeline and providing financial analysis for end-of-period reportsKeep market databases and deal pipeline up to dateSupport other team members as appropriate during the life cycle of an investmentEnsure that the investment research files, and other collected information, including legal documentation, are maintained in conformity with our policies and proceduresEnsure that new and existing investment files are properly documented by monitoring investments, amendments, and disbursements, including financial analysis and forecastingCollaborate with departments at BDC such as Marketing and Public Relations to produce promotional materials and press releasesLeverage research tasks to contribute to the fund’s intellectual capital, by sharing and suggesting insights that support though leadership within the fund’s scopeDeal SourcingAccompany senior colleagues at investment community or industry events, forming initial relationships in the ecosystemPerform market research and scouting to inform the fund’s investment strategy, identifying emerging markets, verticals, technologies, or companiesConduct initial business plan reviews, support initial communications with entrepreneurs and referring sources, prepare initial interview guides and alignment memo with recommendations to pursue or declineDeal MakingSupport due diligence analysis on companies’ market, competition, management, sales, products, cap table, and anything that is relevant to determining potential business value and exit strategiesManage operational tasks in due diligence such as booking meetings, and preparing interview guidesDetermine and validate performance metrics, feeding valuation models, forecasts and financial pro formasSustainability Venture FundAnalyze technical documentation and/or work with technical consultants to evaluate technologies, products, and servicesAssist in reference calls with competitors, clients, industry experts, and prospect company’s current or past employeesConduct routine compliance policy procedures, such as KYC (Know Your Client) and AML (Anti Money Laundering) and BDC EligibilityRecord information in BDC systems and databases (i.e. Frameworks, CLICs) on an ongoing basisPortfolio Management & SupportConduct mark-to-market tasks to support the portfolio’s fair value reportingMonitor portfolio performance, comparing performance to forecasts and models, and relaying potential opportunities and issues to managementParticipate occasionally in investee board meetings as an observer, keeping abreast of developments and escalating relevant information to PartnersAssist investees with introductions to potential suppliers, investors, and employeesWHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORTypical BackgroundWorking toward an MBA or bachelor’s degree in commerce, economics, science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Other degrees are viable, if the professional has strong analytical skillsIf an MBA student, 1 to 3 years of pre-MBA experience in a role involving structured thinking, financial analysis, and technical expertise is an asset. These profiles are likely to come from, but are not limited to:Finance roles: venture capital, private equity, investment bank, accounting firmOperator roles: technology startup, industry-leading corporation, industry specialistAdvisory roles: consulting, law, corporate strategy, corporate developmentTechnical KnowledgeGood skills in Excel, particularly in building financial models that include sensitivity analysis and scenario modeling, as well as performing data analysis.
