The Maintenance and Engineering Manager is accountable for the effective delivery of maintenance & engineering function for the Mill and ensuring the level of reliability required to attain planned production levels while containing costs through most effectively applying maintenance resources This position will lead equipment reliability and functionality is in order to support the achievement of uptime and productivity targets while ensuring cost, health & safety, environment, quality and human resource objectives are met in compliance with Corporate Principles & Guidelines and applicable legislation.
Responsibilities
General Management
- As a member of the Mill Management Team, participates in the leadership of the overall business of the mill
- Provides support to the development and implementation strategic and operational plans for the mill
- Monitors and analyzes emerging maintenance and engineering issues as they relate to the mill and leads the completion of maintenance and engineering projects related projects/initiatives which are identified to be corporate priorities.
Maintenance Programs
- Develops, implements, directs and coordinates planned and unscheduled maintenance requirements and works with all departments to achieve maximum uptime and increased production
- Ensure the development and implementation of medium to long term maintenance plans for the mill to maximize uptime and efficiency
- Ensures that mill downtime and process upsets due to failures, design deficiencies, etc. are kept within agreed to minimum levels
- Works closely with other departments on equipment upgrades and alterations to enhance efficiency, promote energy conservation
Engineering Programs
- Provides direction and oversight to project engineering and engineering development activities; and, takes a leadership role in capital and maintenance programs to ensure they are completed on time and within budget
- Ensures the development and implementation of medium to long term engineering plans for the mill to maximize uptime and efficiency
Maintenance Reliability
- Initiates continuous improvement and strive towards maintenance reliability
- He plays a pivotal role in the planning and execution of the Mill shutdowns including staffing
- Maximize production through improved machine reliability by ensuring the efficient operation of plant equipment and services
Safety, Enviroment & Quality
- Works closely with department staff and others in the mill to ensure a high level of safety, housekeeping, and environmental awareness
- Ensures that maintenance processes meet safety and environmental codes, policies and regulations
- Provides direction and input on Mill Safety Programs
- Serves as a member of the Health and Safety Committee
Staff Management
- zProvides leadership to the team and fosters an environment which motivates the team to fully use its capabilities in achieving desired business results
- Establishes and clearly defines responsibility for staff on the team and ensures the ongoing management and support of staff and effective employee performance
- Plan the use of human resources. Identify needs for recruitment and placement of required staff. Establish organizational structures. Establish work schedules. Supervise staff. Monitor and evaluate performance
Financial Management
- Develops departmental budgets, prioritizes spending, and advises senior management on cost over-runs and extraordinary equipment requisitions.
- Ensures department cost statements are effectively utilized and analyzed at all levels of the department
- Accountable for effective usage of capital funds and providing leadership in the preparation of capital job requests and their completion within established specifications
- Ensures all contract labour is most efficiently utilized and accounted for and reduced to minimum numbers as jobs are completed
External Relationships
- Manages relationships and interactions with auditors, tax and pension benefit authorities, actuaries, lawyers, suppliers and others as required
Qualifications
- A degree in Engineering or trade qualifications in a relevant industrial field
- Minimum Eight (8) years of experience of leading a maintenance and engineering department
- Or a combination or equivalent education and experience
- Expertise in the industry including project management and operations management
- Knowledge of pulp and paper technology, operations and production methods would be beneficial
- A strategic thinker with the ability to manage complexity; able to balance the big picture with the details
- Excellent leadership and team building skills. Able to recruit, develop and retain high calibre people
- Ability to organize and plan, delegate authority, lead and motivate people, and maintain effective control
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences and present financial information in an audience-appropriate manner
- Demonstrated ability to act with high standards and integrity at all times
- Possesses situational awareness of surroundings with the ability to adapt to new and changing environments, who can relate well at all levels
- A high sense of urgency with regards to moving projects forward and making operational improvements; action and goal oriented
- A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Adaptable and understands a complex and constantly changing business environment. Able to keep pace with a company going through significant growth and change
