The Little Shuswap is traditionally known as Skwlax, which translates to Black Bear in Secwépemctsín, the traditional language. LSLB has a unique vision and drive; the Band has not only led the way in tourism within the Shuswap, but it has also led the way in economic development. The creation of Quaaout Lodge, Talking Rock Golf, Le7ka Spa, and Little Shuswap Gas Station has helped promote Secwepemc culture, and allowed the Little Shuswap Lake people to develop world class accommodation and leisure activities. The governance structure of LSLB is unique and forward-looking, divided into 3 distinct sectors: Administration, which covers programs and services for Band members; Territorial Stewardship, which addresses title and rights issues and external government-government relations; and Economic Development, which oversees the business operations of the community and works to promote a strong, resilient economy for the community. Strong management and leadership with clear vision and an excellent team of committed employees make up the engine that drives the community forward.

The Opportunity – A Day in the life of the Education Manager:

Reporting to and under the direction of the Education Director, the Education Manager will act as senior advisor and strategist for the Little Shuswap Lake Band (LSLB) Education Department. This position is to serve others through results-based initiatives to achieve desired outcomes of community members and elected leaders. The Education Manager is both specialized in Education and attentive to meeting community/membership-based needs. The Education Manager will ensure that success and self-sufficient futures are attained by LSLB members through innovative education, training, and program opportunities. This will be achieved by keeping the community collectively involved to enhance respect, trust, accountability, transparency, and credibility of the LSLB Education Department.

The Education Manager will engage all LSLB stakeholders to plan together, give each other feedback, and support each other in new efforts. He/she will have skills to help shape the Education and Training Department’s future that is based on shared values, goals, and ideas. In this role, the incumbent will be tasked to ensure five principles are upheld in all matters associated with the Department’s mandate: influence and service, vision and hope, character and trust, relationships and action, mutual cooperation and accountability.

Requirements – What you bring to the organization:

· Minimum – Bachelor of Education, Preference – Master’s Degree in Education;

· Understanding and knowledge of Secwepemc culture and traditions and Indigenous Education and Education systems. Ability to speak the language is an asset;

· Superb interpersonal, relationship, communication and presentation skills;

· Ability to demonstrate integrity, trust, respect and understanding with a high degree of professionalism;

· Strong organizational, facilitation, planning and problem-solving skills;

· Knowledge of applicable education policies and procedures in First Nations education;

· Knowledge of best practices in effective delivery of education and training program;s

· Experience in researching, developing, interpreting, advising on and implementing education agreements, strategic plans, projects, etc.

· Ability to use an education database including, accessing, inputting, and compiling data;

· The verbal communication skills to communicate with a diverse client group;

· The written communication skills to produce succinct correspondence, proposals and reports;

· The ability to research, analyse and reason logically within tight and conflicting timeframes;

· Experience in leading and working effectively in teams;

· Experience in mentoring staff and planning workload allocation;

· Ability to identify education and training needs of individuals, families and the community;

· A commitment to providing effective, relevant and adaptable education and training services;

· Ability to write, facilitate and present information to all stakeholder audiences;

· Ability to provide advice and support to Education Director and elected leaders on education and training matters;

· Experience in leading projects and implementing new initiatives in education and training;

· Ability to work independently and collaboratively;

· Knowledge of MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Publisher);

· A valid Class 5 Driver’s License and reliable transportation is required;

· Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check required.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

· Create and execute a 3-year plan that will be transparent, accountable, and communicated with all stakeholders being served, inclusive of annual results-based planning with staff on a quarterly basis;

· Include all member/community stakeholders in the development of a vision for education and training for LSLB; Council, elders, staff, students, parents, etc.;

· Communicate and collaborate with all LSLB departments, members/community, external entities, industry, etc., to identify current and future education and training needs for LSLB members/community;

· Create a communication plan which will ensure that the policies and procedures of the Education Department are transparent to all, and illustrate the accountability of the department;

· Develop Local Education Agreement and manage activities and programs in consultation with the Education Director;

· Develop a tracking system for all students in K-12 and postsecondary education;

· Identify budgets needed to carry out the 3-year Strategic Education Action Plan;

· Set department direction, developing department staff, strengthening department structure, integrating results-based measurement strategies, monitoring progression, and sustaining growth and opportunities;

· Create a broad template for Education and Training Department staff to monitor progress and to provide community members with the general guidelines that will take place, identifying opportunities that both challenge and support staff to contribute towards their own professional growth plans each year;

· Leading projects and implement new initiatives in education and training with LSLB community, Education Team and other stakeholder group participation

· Develop and maintain positive and effective relations with LSLB parents, elders, community, other Secwepemc bands and School districts, postsecondary institutions, and other key stakeholders;

· Write department reports such as LSLB Education Department annual report; therefore gather necessary data and supporting material on an ongoing basis;

· Participate in Education department meetings and other relevant meetings as required;

· Coordinates the annual development of Professional Development Plans for staff. Develops an annual professional development plan to identify personal and professional needs for own training and or development and how this has changed practice;

· Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational conferences, reviewing professional publications, establishing professional networks and connecting with key people in Education and Training, and keeps informed of best practices in education.

Salary: $42,907.62-$94,579.91 per year
