Job Summary & Key Responsibilities A Donald Hill Post-Doctoral Fellow position is open at Dalhousie University, Canada. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be co-supervised by Dr. Ya-Jun Pan at the Advanced Control and Mechatronics Lab in the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, and Dr. Thomas Trappenberg at the Laboratory for Hierarchical Anticipatory Learning in the Faculty of Computer Sciences.
The candidate will conduct research on the development of a supporting system that would be used in clinics to support physio- and occupational therapists, and potentially even at the home of patients. The research will investigate a sensor system including a proprioceptive sensor to measure muscle movements, a single Electroencephalogram (EEG) electrode over the motor cortex, and a vision system to measure arm movements. Multiple sensors and the vision system will generate rich data for analysis in the rehabilitation process. The resulting data are analysed with specialized software to produce a training plan for each patient. The research will involve system design, data analysis, software development, extensive simulation, and experimental studies.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. degree (or close to completion) in any of the following programs: Computer Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering or Biomedical Engineering or related field. The candidate should have solid background in mechatronics, systems and control, robotics, measurements, machine learning/deep learning, software development and data analysis. Expertise in rehabilitation, perception, assistive robotics, and intelligent systems would be an asset. The candidate should have strong communication skills, publication records, technical writing, programing skills in Solidworks, Matlab/Simulink, Python, C/C++, Java, user interface design.
Applicants who are currently registered in a Doctoral program are expected to complete their doctorate by the start date of the Fellowship. Applicants who have already completed their doctorate must have done so within the past 3 years. As a rule, individuals who hold a permanent academic position to which they will return will not be considered in this competition. Exceptions may be made in the case of individuals who, for example, are substantially changing their field of research.
The Donald Hill Post-Doctoral Fellowships have been created to accelerate the careers of recent doctoral graduates engaged in leading-edge research who have also demonstrated an interest in the impact of technology on broader society. There is an expectation that fellows will become engaged and appreciate the necessity and benefits of interfacing with a wide diversity of disciplines, knowledge, and cultures to recognize and solve emerging challenges.

Due to the terms of the funding arrangement, fellowships are restricted to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
Salary Range/Pay Rate $60,000
