Job Title: Controller

Job Description

The Controller is responsible for leading the Corporate Accounting, Insurance Accounting, and Tax functions team.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the delivery of timely, accurate, and relevant financial information through the production of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.

  • Manage the preparation and submission of all statutory financial reports and tax returns.

  • Identify, implement, and maintain tax-effective strategies for all levels of taxation.

  • Lead the annual external audit and ensure minimal auditor adjustments to financial statements.

  • Update and implement new accounting policies as required in accordance with ASPE and IFRS.

  • Identify and mitigate possible control failures/areas of concern through regular reviews with the Manager, Internal Audit.

  • Oversee insurance accounting function including regulatory filings across various government bodies.

  • Oversee the preparation of associated transaction and account analysis of all reported financial information.

  • Responsible for the preparation and review of GL account reconciliations including sub-system to ledger reconciliations.

  • Act as the business liaison for all indirect tax inquiries, new ventures, and the analysis of accounting impact.

  • Develop and maintain accounting and financial policies.

  • Serve as the relationship owner with external auditors, pension actuaries, insurance actuaries, tax consultants, and investment advisors.

  • Oversight of pension administration, pension valuation, and pension annual information return filing.

  • Hire, train, and coach team members, providing ongoing feedback.

  • Ensure the team has sufficient skills and experience to meet department objectives.

  • Provide performance management as required.

  • Ensure knowledge transfer and retention within the team.

  • Manage succession and career development for team members.

  • Carry out other related tasks and projects as assigned.

Essential Skills

  • Competent with financial reporting.

  • Knowledgeable with IFRS standards.

  • Preparation of financial statements.

  • Consolidations.

  • Technical memos.

  • Experienced within a regulatory environment.

  • Designated CPA (Canadian preferable).

  • 8 years experience post designation.

  • Prior managerial experience – leading a team of at least 5-10 individuals.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Tax experience.

  • Experience with ASPE standards.

  • Workday implementation experience.

  • Experience within the insurance sector.

  • Prior Big 4 experience.

  • Collaborative and team-focused.

  • Empathetic and people-first attitude.

  • Willingness to do whatever is needed.
