COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR
(Up to 40h/week, remote base considered, interest/ability to conduct field work in rural Alberta, field hours include some evening and weekend work, diversity valued, rural candidates encouraged, full-time)
Agroforestry & Woodlot Extension Society (AWES) is looking for a Communications Coordinator to help educate Alberta’s agriculture community about tools and tips for growing a greener farm. This position will lead the way in promoting Agroforestry through the creation of sustainable programming and in developing collaborative relationships with our partner organizations. If you consider yourself to have creative social media skills, strong communication skills and a passion for sustainable farming and all that it entails, then consider applying to AWES. The ideal candidate will have a basic understanding of AWES work particularly its online presence, and good knowledge of digital communications and presentation techniques. This position will be based remotely and rural candidates with experience in Alberta’s farming community will be preferred.
Duties of the AWES Communication Coordinator include but are not limited to:
- Report to the AWES Executive Director.
- Assist with the general administration of AWES, including providing reports on program activity.
- Plan, develop materials for, and facilitate online and in person AWES events (e.g. workshops, field tours, forest walks, and radio/TV interviews) on topics related to sustainable farming, agroforestry and farming in general;
- Community engagement with users, followers and subscribers;
- Collaborate with AWES partners and stakeholders within public and private sectors;
- Assist with the development and dissemination of AWES materials and tools (e.g., articles, videos, webpages, or newsletters) on forest and agriculture related topics
- Assist with the development of proposals to acquire project funding; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Technical Knowledge:
- Sustainable farming, sustainable rural living, wildlife, horticulture, composting and native species
- Extension methodology and information packaging;
- Social media enews/infographic and other digital content development ;
- Web-enabled learning methodologies & best practices;
- Plant and soil taxonomy, ecosystem classification; and
- Qualifications and Skills
- University degree, technical diploma, or experience in relevant field or in progress (horticulture, environmental, agriculture);
- Strong knowledge of computer applications, social media tools for business & emerging technology platforms;
- At least one year of experience working in horticulture, agriculture, forestry, land management, or related natural sciences;
- Effective writing, administration, and communication skills, including experience with technical writing and presentation delivery;
- Experience working with stakeholders, good interpersonal skills;
- Experience with basic Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Send in Blue, Issu, WordPress or similar software;
- Basic knowledge of the top motivational speakers and motivational YouTube channel landscape and/or prior experience analyzing and organizing content is a plus;
- Willing to work independently as well as be a team player, strong “can do’ attitude, irregular hours and in enthusiastic about occasional work in a field setting
- Organized, enthusiastic about the work and subject matter, flexible, self-motivated, and a team player
*must have a valid driver license and be comfortable driving on rural roads.
*this position is based out of the Crop Diversification Centre North Office (NW Edmonton). Rural Alberta remote work is also acceptable.
