Job Summary
The Equity & Inclusion Office is committed to ensuring that UBC is a community in which human rights are respected and equity, diversity and inclusion are integral to university life. Through its leadership, vision and collaborative action, the Equity & Inclusion Office will further UBC’s commitment to excellence, equity and mutual respect.
The position works to support the development and execution of communication initiatives of the Equity & Inclusion Office (EIO) to support student, as well as staff and faculty diversity towards a more inclusive UBC.
Organizational Status
Reports to and works with the Communications Manager, Equity & Inclusion Office to support the communication needs of the EIO at UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan. Works closely with each of the core teams of the Equity & Inclusion Office to support their respective communications needs.
Work Performed
Graphic Design
-
Designs print and digital materials, including: digital signage, social media graphics, posters, postcards, reports, brochures, presentations, promotional assets, and/or illustrations, in line with the UBC brand and with attention to audience needs;

Co-ordinates with printers and vendors;
-
Develops templates that help accelerate production and unify the look and feel of office materials.
Website Administration
-
Co-ordinates updates to content on the Equity & Inclusion Office website;
-
Produces website analytics and usability reports that support decision-making and evaluation; delivers technical enhancements and training.
Writing
-
Researches, writes and/or coordinates web and social content for student, staff, and faculty audiences, including, but not limited to people profiles, announcements, educational and informational blog posts and stories;
-
Performs research and fact-checking analysis.
Content Development and Internal Communications
-
Creates content for social media channels, including photography, illustrations, video clips, blog posts, as aligned with wider communication initiatives and/or campaigns;
-
Produces distribution toolkits and analytical reports to inform decision-making;
-
Curates relevant and existing content from partner channels and groups;
-
Co-ordinates distribution of promotional materials across the university and wider community, including in print and digital format;

Organizes and manages digital assets.
Communications Support
-
Supports the Communications Manager with communication efforts, including planning communication-related meetings, translating discussions into structured documents and plans; coordinating communication project activities and documentation, including tracking and documenting tasks, timelines, and resources;

Develop communication plans as assigned and coordinates work flow amongst communication project contributors to meet deadlines;
-
May represent the Equity & Inclusion Office in committees and/or forums;
-
Manages and publishes editorial and event calendars;
-
Maintains exterior signage, bulletin boards, and communication assets, including sandwich boards, banners, etc.
Photography/Video
-
Co-ordinates and/or produces photography and video content as needed and identified in communication plans; may engage and work with campus partners to produce such content.
Email Marketing
-
Creates monthly internal and external newsletters, including media recaps, by writing and soliciting content internally and from campus-wide partners;

Designs and updates templates and produces analytical reports to inform decision-making.
Event Support
-
Responsible for supporting the execution of events, including event promotion, logistics, vendors, and day-of event setup and delivery; may attend events after regular hours as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.

Supervision Received
Reports and takes direction for day-to-day operations from the Communications Manager. The position works autonomously under overall guidelines from the Communications Manager.
Supervision Given
May assign tasks and provide guidance to student communications staff as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in the field of communications, graphic design, digital media, marketing, journalism, public relations, preferred.

Strong personal interest and/or background related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-oppression.

Demonstrated ability to enact equity principles in day-to-day interactions with a diverse group of colleagues.
-
Demonstrated experience meeting the needs of the work performed. Demonstrated experience of working with social media and websites in an organizational/corporate environment.

Experience using content management systems.
-
Ability to adapt writing styles for different audiences and purposes.
-
Demonstrated ability for graphic design in an organization setting, and using Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
-
Understanding of current digital, social media, and content marketing trends.

Strong technical know-how or willingness to learn some or all of the following: photography, video, video-editing. Existing experience an asset.

Exceptional writing abilities, being able to translate complex information for a general audience in concise, efficient, and engaging copy.

Ability to work with diverse individuals in a complex setting.

Knowledge and experience of working in a brand environment, with an understanding of visual design principles.

Experience with social media monitoring and management, website analytics, and data visualization tools.

Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with an ability to deliver effective presentations.

Professional experience in a post-secondary institution or similar environment an asset.

Maintains excellent rapport with the university community as well as external stakeholders.

Exercises good judgment and maturity in all communications.

Ability to communicate effectively by composing correspondence, reports, presentations, and other written materials using clear concise business English.
