Job Summary Dalhousie Financial Services strives to provide the highest quality financial services and information to ensure the effective stewardship of University assets to the benefit of students and scholarly activities. Financial Services is a core service unit of the University, providing services in areas of financial accounting, budgeting, procurement and risk management, cash management, financial systems and policies, and the University’s endowment, pension and short-term investment programs. Reporting to the Associate Director Finance Operations, the Capital Assets Analyst is a key resource in the monitoring and accounting for the fixed assets and capital projects for the University. The Capital Assets Analyst also provides accounting support related to a range of accounting functions throughout the year.
Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain the master list of Capital Assets, coordinating the capital inventory review process with campus stakeholders, and ensuring records are current.
  • Compile working papers and process accounting transactions for acquisitions, disposals, and amortization.
  • Prepare accounting reconciliations and periodic internal reports and analysis of financial results.
  • Maintain effective internal controls as they relate to the tracking and accounting for Capital Assets, and act as a key resource for campus relating to questions about coding for transactions.
  • Develop methods, procedures, and documentation to ensure effective and efficient processes. Maintain an understanding of the internal controls impacting the University’s financials and solutioning for areas of weakness.
  • Enhance business processes through the development of in-depth understanding of current workflows, identifying opportunities and options for improved efficiency, and support their implementation as required.
Note The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Commerce or Business, with an Accounting major or similar area of study, with five years of progressively responsible post-degree financial accounting experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated experience with fixed asset lifecycle management.
  • Excellent organization, attention to detail, interpersonal and communication skills, and a high degree of solid judgment.
  • The ability to work independently and also collaborate effectively with stakeholders at various levels.
  • The ability understand the big picture and the creativity and agility to work within an environment of constant change.
  • Advanced level MS Office Suite capabilities, especially MS Excel (pivot tables, graphs, charts, macros).
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and confidential matters in a high-volume, deadline driven environment with accuracy, diplomacy, and reliability.
Assets
  • Completion of, or actively pursuing the Canadian CPA designation.
  • Prior exposure to Ellucian Banner and Cognos reporting.
