The CSB Bandmaster must endeavor to lead the band in fulfilling this mission.The CSB bandmaster has a responsibility to support and encourage the growth and development of music ministry at all levels. They recognize the essential spiritual role of proclaiming the gospel message through the medium of music, both individually and corporately. The bandmaster will commit to being prepared, organized, encouraging, and willing to continually grow and learn.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties as below.
- The bandmaster lives out his/her faith by continually exemplifying Christian morals and values in their daily walk with Jesus.
- Ensures that the terms of reference and the Canadian Staff Band Manuel of Operation and Terms of Reference is followed and adhered to.
- Leading by example, the bandmaster comes alongside all band members to support and help nurture them in their own Christian journey.
- Provide leadership and conduct the band during weekly rehearsals, as scheduled.
- Rehearse music and parts to prepare for performances.
- Choose repertoire and ministry methods in keeping with the mission and vision of the Canada and Bermuda Territory and that will be helpful in fulfilling the mission of the CSB.
- Provide leadership for CSB ministry engagements. Fulfill other duties for engagements as agreed upon with the Executive Officer (speaking, leading meetings, etc.)
- Meet regularly with the CSB Executive Committee, as scheduled.
- Foster a positive working partnership with the Executive Officer
- Provide oversight to the CSB itinerary including rehearsals, ministry engagements, recordings, etc. in consultation with the Executive Officer and the CSB Executive Committee.
- Continually develop personal conducting technique and teaching skills.
- Support The Salvation Army mission through various music and arts programs.
- Assist in ensuring adherence to music copyright law.
- May assist in the preparation of related sub-sections of departmental budget.
- May be asked to contribute writings and reviews to various publications.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of a formal post-secondary/college diploma of two academic years in Music or/and Arts.
- Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Five years or more related experience as a conductor, bandmaster, or group leader.
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Child Check (if appropriate).
- Participate as an active and responsible team member.
- Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
- Must comply with all Salvation Army policies and procedures and associated legislation.
- Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
- An awareness of social media guidelines and standards, with a willingness to engage in online tools to support ministry.
- Self-motivated and disciplined.
- Good interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Passion for music, leadership, and music ministry development is required.
- Ability to compose and arrange music is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to build positive, productive, and supportive relationships with the community, corps members, volunteers, and staff.
- Ability to work in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere.
- Proficient computer skills in using all aspects of Microsoft Office and experience with desktop publishing software, page layout, and graphics techniques.
- Valid driver’s license, own vehicle and insurance; a current drivers abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
CompensationThe target hiring range for this position is $22.65-$28.31, with the ability to progress to a maximum of $33.97. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
