Assistant University Secretary

Provide high-level assistance and support to the university secretary in ensuring compliance with the university’s governance system by providing policy advice and operational support to the Board, Senate and their committees. This includes developing policy instruments and other documents for consideration by the governance bodies, providing advice and governance expertise to Chairs and administration, preparing official records of proceedings and communicating good governance practices.

University degree, with a graduate degree preferred.

Extensive related experience in governance, preferably in an academic environment. Experience drafting governance documents and developing policy. Experience organizing and supporting leadership of meetings.

Thorough understanding of the governance framework in which the University operates including relevant legislation and regulations. Knowledge of principles and theories in University governance and University academic policy related to a wide range of academic issues e.g. tenure and promotion, curriculum and academic standards, bicameral governance models to develop new policies and approaches. Extensive critical thinking and analytical skills to develop policy documents. Superior communication skills both orally and in writing to present complex issues and information and influence direction. Superior skills in writing technical documents such as by-laws, motions and policies. Superior level of tact, diplomacy and discretion. Advanced capacity to influence others. Superior ability to maintain confidentiality. Superior planning and organization skills to meet rigid deadlines. Superior capacity to manage time effectively. Ability to quickly adapt to shifting priorities and deliver on tight deadlines. Superior ability to manage high volume of work, frequently under pressure.

  • Compensation:

York’s CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award. Employees will receive the grid adjustment and depending on performance, eligible permanent employees may move to the next step of the grid and may receive a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.Visit the CPM Compensation page on the HR Website to find out more about York’s CPM Compensation Program.
