The Opportunity

The Department of Physics at Simon Fraser University seeks applications from exceptional experimental physics candidates for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor to work at the interface between silicon-based quantum information and photonics. SFU Physics is carving out a distinct profile within the quantum information science community at a time when the commercialization of quantum information technology is both growing and transforming the field. We have a strong atomic, molecular and optical physics, and quantum information (AMO/QI) group that has ties to other groups in the department and across the university and participates actively in provincial and national quantum information science initiatives.

The Department of Physics engages a faculty complement consisting of 25 research-focused and 5 teaching- focused faculty members. We have strong undergraduate and graduate programs, and a commitment to public outreach. Our research strengths are concentrated in the areas of AMO/QI, biological physics, condensed matter, particle physics, and cosmology. For further information about our department and programs, we invite prospective candidates to visit our home page at

The core duties of an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics are to engage in research, teaching, and service. The typical workload distribution for tenure-track assistant professors at SFU is 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service. The responsibilities, terms, and conditions of employment of research faculty are listed in the SFU-SFUFA Collective Agreement.

The Successful Candidate

Candidates are required to hold a Ph.D. in Physics and to have directed research in experimental quantum information that has achieved wide recognition. They should be recognized as an emerging international leader in the field. They should have experience applying for funding and supervising the work of research personnel.

Strong preference will be given to candidates who are positioned to build upon the achievements in silicon-based quantum information research in the Department. In addition, we seek a colleague whose track record illustrates our shared values of equity, diversity and inclusion, collegiality, and commitment to respectful interactions with students, staff, and faculty.

How To Apply

SFU recognizes that alternative career paths and/or career interruptions (e.g. parental leave, leave due to illness) can impact research achievements and commits to ensuring that leaves are taken into careful consideration.

Candidates are encouraged to highlight in their application how alternative paths and/or interruptions have had an impact on their career. SFU also recognizes the value of mentoring and research training, outreach, professional service, and non-traditional areas of research and/or research outputs; demonstrated experience in increasing diversity in the previous institutional environment, and in curriculum, is also an asset.

All applications should be addressed to Dr. Barbara Frisken, Chair, Department of Physics, submitted via an online application form available at: https:/ The competition will remain open until the position is filled.
