We are looking for candidates possessing Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees in the natural sciences or engineering looking to sink their teeth into a fast paced, high-energy startup environment, working on novel approaches to a problem that has stumped the pharmaceutical industry for decades. We want hard working, independent scientists who are handy in the lab and easy to work with outside of the lab.
This entry-level position will work closely with our senior scientific team, formulation teams, and in vitro testing teams to streamline the analysis of novel formulations in the most efficient manner possible. This position would serve as part of our analytical chemistry team but also allow opportunities for considerable exposure to the formulation development and synthetic chemistry processes through the analysis of novel compounds used for transdermal drug delivery.

The analytical technician’s duties will include but are not limited to sample analysis (ie. performing HPLC/GCMS/LCMS assays) for both QC and R&D samples.

We value applicants who are able to work on a project and take full ownership of it, while maintaining flexibility and understanding the larger vision at Avro. As members of a quickly growing startup led by young founders, we place a lot of emphasis on culture – we want to make sure that you fit in with the team and can enjoy your time working with us.

Generous compensation and stock options are included with this position, scaling with experience.

Job Responsibilities include

· Operation of various analytical instruments, such as: High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS)

· Optimization of schedules for running assays to quantify samples received both from the synthetic team and in vitro diffusion testing team

· Development of validated analytical methods (HPLC/LC-MS/GC-MS) for the quantification of pharmaceutical analytes of interest from varying samples

· Demonstrating a thorough understanding of contamination prevention techniques and knowledgeable in the safe and efficient use of chemicals and solvents

· Demonstrating effective communication skills, both written and verbal

· Demonstrating strong understanding of quantitative techniques for measurement of liquids and solids

· Strong aptitude and motivation for analytical instrument maintenance and troubleshooting required.

· Development of inherently safe processes based on thermal hazard assessment

· Maintaining a safe and well-organized laboratory work area

· High-level knowledge of organic synthesis reactions and their mechanisms

· Strong ability to search the chemical literature with SciFinder/USP and other tools

· Sample preparation of biological fluid samples followed by HPLC and/or LC-MS targeted analysis

· Daily tasks include sample and standard preparations for quality control (QC) analysis of internal synthetic products via HPLC, LC-MS and NMR.

· NMR Data analysis is an asset and will be required as a part of the QC process

· Quality assurance duties include weekly data review and documentation that meet pre-specified limits

Experience:

· B.Sc. or higher in Chemistry/relevant field with >2 years experience

· MSc. or higher with an Analytical Chemistry specialization is preferred

· Must have a strong knowledge of analytical chemistry, relevant instrumentation and associated method development

· Method development involving biological matrices or biological analyte quantification is an asset

· Strong technical troubleshooting skills of HPLC, GC-MS or LC-MS instrumentation is an asset

· Experience with Thermo Xcalibur, Agilent Chemstation, or Perkin Elmer TurboMass is an asset

· Experience with handling high throughput/large volumes of testing is an asset
