The Modernization, IMT, and Research Branch provides data, research, and evaluation, and IMT services to support evidence-based decision making in the Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services. The branch reports data for business operations, assesses the effectiveness, efficiency, and implications of programs and services, links data systems, transforms data into insights, and generates new knowledge and data innovation to drive PSES and its partners forward.

Your Role

  • As a Data Engineer, you’ll design and maintain robust data systems that power decision-making across Alberta’s criminal justice and emergency services systems. From integrating diverse datasets to processing spatial and GIS data, your work will ensure data is accessible, reliable, and actionable.
  • Collaborating with our Data Scientist and analysts, you will:
  • Build and optimize data pipelines and infrastructure to support advanced analytics.
  • Enable data integration across structured, unstructured, and spatial datasets.
  • Develop scalable solutions that support data visualization, dashboards, and interactive tools.
  • Partner with stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver data solutions that matter.

 

Your Expertise
To excel in this role, you bring:

  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and platforms like Hadoop, Snowflake, Databricks, and FME.
  • Experience with large-scale data systems, data linking, and data visualization.
  • Knowledge of GIS platforms and spatial data analysis.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills to simplify complex technical concepts for diverse audiences.
  • A growth mindset and a passion for using data to solve real-world problems.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

  • A university degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of four (4) years experience in data administration and systems architecture.

Equivalencies 
A related two-year diploma in computer technology or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution and six years related experience; or a related one-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and seven years related experience 

Assets:

  • Experience in ETL/ELT development.
  • Experience in data warehousing and developing data pipelines.
  • Experience using SQL.
  • Experience in cloud and on premises technology, applications, and usage.

  • Office will be located in Edmonton at the John E Brownlee Building, 10365 97 St. 
  • Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (permanent full time)
  • Monday to Friday (8:15 am to 4:30 pm)
